Great, now we don't need to feel guilty about burning fossil fuels.

Will schemes like this really make much difference to our carbon output? The only way to solve the problem is to fly and drive less etc, but if people think offsetting their contributions is as easy as giving money to a charity, this could be counterproductive.

I agree that there's no alternative to actually cutting your consumption, but if there's a way to offset the usage that you inevitably incur (i.e. by visiting your grandma who lives in Egypt), then that's got to be a good thing.

Actually, I don't know about this company, but I know that the Conservation Fund, a non-profit, actually takes the donations and directly applies them to planting trees in protected areas, so that is physically offsetting your emissions. Plus, they've just partnered with Travelocity.com, so they are also going to expand their reach. It's really cool, you should check it out.
